This manual is a comprehensive source of information for the majority of car and light commercial diesel engines, of under three litres capacity, in use today. It covers virtually all the European and Japanese diesel engined vehicles introduced before 1987.
Detailed knowledge and experience of diesel engines is not required in order to make full use of this manual. It has been written and laid out specifically to enable someone with a good knowledge of petrol engines to understand the function of individual diesel injection components and the differences between petrol and diesel engines.
Section 1
describes the operation, combustion process and injection systems of typical diesel engines, before comparing these functions with the more widely known petrol engine.
Following this is a more detailed description of engine construction features, fuel system components, starting aids, turbocharging and vacuum pumps.
Section 2
covers maintenance operations such as fuel filters, bleeding, static and dynamic timing, idle and fast idle speed setting, injector and glow plug checks, injection pump drive belt checking and adjustment, compression testing and injection pump lubrication.
Furthermore, it covers tools and equipment available for the service and repair of diesel engines and fuel systems, divided into three areas covering injectors, pumps and pre-heating systems.
The final part of this section is a comprehensive Trouble shooting chart listing all the common problems associated with diesel engines and their possible causes.
Section 3
comprises the model related chapters for each group of models using a particular engine.
In these self-contained chapters, all the specific details of setting idle speed, fast idle speed, bleeding the fuel system, replacing and timing the injection pump and replacing the cylinder head gasket are described, together with a wiring diagram of the pre-heating system.
Section 4
lists Technical Data for all the engines and models covered by this manual. For ease of use, each model has its own column of data and specifications.
